Love Me Right review

Love Me Right is the first album from Angel City. There are eleven excellent tracks plus three bonus remixes. The album was written and produced by Bass Bumpers' Frank Knebel along with James Theochari & Tom Kent (Danni Minogue), Stuart Crichton (Jamiroquai, Narcotic Thrust), Pete Hammond (PWL), Chris Allen (Sonique's biggest hits) and Grammy awards winners Phil Larsen, Bruce Elliot Smith (Kylie - Come Into My World) and Rob Davies (Kylie - Can't Get You Out of My Head, Spiller - Groovejet), who between them have enjoyed over 150 UK top ten hits! With a name like Angel City, one would predictably imagine an album filled with the inspiring, angelic voices of Charlotte Church or Josh Groban. But Angel City, a project released by the famed Ministry of Sound Records, is a grooving metropolis with a different kind of celestial being. And Love Me Right is the result of the fusion between popular dance tracks and the luscious vocals of 22-year-old Lara McAllen.

Having worked with Shakira and Armin van Buuren among others, McAllen's involvement here with a number of big-named DJs finds the album initially sounding like a Madison-Avenue-meets-Kylie-Minogue collaboration, as her husky voice butters up the uplifting vibes of the electronic wave. Various classic dance tracks are given an underground house twist by the various DJ producers on hand. Do You Know is a tidy blend of Robert Miles Children and Michelle Gayle's hit Do You Know, while Rezonanance Q remix of Ready for the World's 1985 hit Oh Sheila results in their radio single Love Me Right. As well as containing all three hits to date, highlights include soaring anthem Sunrise, the balearic beauty of I Won't Let You Down, mid-tempo yearning of Stay and the disco heaven of Back in Time. Stars is a really uplifting song about two people brought back together. And let's not forget Confession, a mature slice of genius for which Kylie would kill.

Mike Di Scala is turning the radio edit of Love Me Right into a DJ's track with long intros and outros and a much deeper, more progressive feeling. The vocal is retained, as are some of the trance elements, although overall it's more akin to underground house/ trance than club trance. The Dee-lux Mix of I Won’t Let You Down is more your classic clubbing tune with synth stabs, claps, drumrolls and vocals at the forefront. The final mix is for the boffins of the harder genres. With a relentless hard trance beat, the track is stripped back and comes through with a more frenetic, fast-paced energy right at home amongst the lasers and smoke machines. Of course you'll know to avoid this if you dislike the sort of dance music that appears on Top of the Pops, or are in to "real" instruments and songs with more personality. But for lovers of trance, Love Me Right will have hearts pounding and glow ticks waving.
