Broken Social Scene

Biography

Not every group has so many musicians. Nevertheless, Canadian band Broken Social Scene is not an ordinary band. They feel comfortable and the scene is broad enough for all of them. The history of Broken Social Scene started in 1999, when Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew decided to start a band. Later the other musicians who played in different bands in Toronto joined Brendan and Kevin. Such quantity of group members determined the sound: Broken Social Scene as no other band may be proud of their unique sound: guitars, horns, woodwinds and violins are well presented.

Broken Social Scene debut album Feel Good Lost was released in 2001. It was recorded by the duo of Brendan and Kevin, and its sound was really different from what the band is creating now: Feel Good Lost was performed in ambient style. After a couple of first shows the decision to invite some more musicians was taken. As the result, Canning and Drew’s friends joined the band, and during the work on the second album Kevin and Brendan collaborated with Andrew Whiteman, Jason Collett and many others. The second studio work was ready by 2002 and was released under the title You Forgot It in People. That record turned out to be so good that in 2003 it won the Alternative Album of the Year Juno Award. In 2004 Broken Social Scene issued the B-sides and remixes album Bee Hives.

In 2005 the band released their third album Broken Social Scene, the cover of which had been created by Kevin Drew, and that record received fair reviews from music experts. Since that time Broken Social Scene toured a lot, performing live at various festivals such as Virgin Festival and playing in some TV shows (Late Night with Conan O'Brien was one of them). During the shows the band often played with friends, and that let them achieve even richer and unpredictable sound. In spite of the fact that Broken Social Scene was quite busy performing and touring, Kevin Drew worked on his solo album. It is called a solo album, however almost all the musicians of Broken Social Scene took part in its creation. Album Broken Social Scene presents Kevin Drew, Spirit If... was released in 2008, and that record opened the series “Broken Social Scene presents…” Brendan Canning’s Something for All of Us… (2008) became the second album of that series.

In 2010 Broken Social Scene issued their fourth studio work titled Forgiveness Rock Record. The band’s sound will be enjoyed both by their old fans and by those who had not opportunity yet to get familiar with Broken Social Scene creativity.
