In Between review

New work of the creative DJ

Paul Van Dyk was born and grew up in East Berlin. He kept in touch with the world beyond the Berlin Wall, secretly listening to the prohibited Western radio stations and smuggled mixtapes. After the fall of the wall Van Dyk and his mother were permitted to leave East Germany. They moved to Hamburg, but in 1990 Van Dyk came back to Berlin and became a DJ. Soon he became popular in clubs and gathered The Visions of Shiva, but in a short period of time the collective split. By that moment Van Dyk released several mix albums and with his cult work Seven Ways won real success in Britain in 1996. "By the time they realised I was a German, it was too late!" Van Dyk commented up on it. His next studio album Reflections, that saw light in 2003, was derived from van Dyk’s trip to India and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Electrinic Album. Van Dyk released some more mix albums after that, and in August 2007 he presented to the public his new stidio work, In Between.

In Between: somewhere in between trance and pop

In Between is an electronic trip, with one track seguing the other so smoothly, that sometimes it happens imperceptibly for the listener. But the change of the pop slant in the beginning to the trance sounding at the end is very clear. Though the trance sound of In Between is very different from the one in Van Dyk's earliest works. It became more nuanced and multi-layered. The first single from the album, White Lies, sparkling with vocals from Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls, immediately became the hit, thanks to the sexual sweet voice of the pop-singer and energetic club rythm. Haunted, featuring Lo-Fi Sugar, the album opener, is very catchy and memorable. The most impressing and strong tracks, Complicated, Get Back and album closer New York City, are really good due to the vocals and lyrics by Ashley Tomberlin from the project Luminary, whom Van Dyk appreciated highly as a musician in his interview. One of the most pop-sounding songs is danceable Talk in Grey, while Another Sunday is maybe the most brilliant piece of sample electronic music on In Between.

Artist producing his own album

After the success of Reflections Van Dyk was deservedly called world DJ number 1 according to the DJ Magazine. In Between - is a long waited creation by the artist with fresh compositions, which demonstrate his masterity not only as a DJ, but also as a producer. The majority of the tracks, besides already mentioned artists, feature such commertially profitable persons, like David Byrne from Talking Heads, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Rea Garvey from the band Reamonn, Ryan Merchant and Wayne Jackson. In Between was written by Van Dyk under the impression from his journey to Cuba, and he brilliantly managed to transfer its atmosphere to the album. To celebrate the release of In Between the famous DJ arranged a meeting with his US fans in the NY club Virgin Megastore and traditional live sets in NewYork Central Park. Many witnesses of this electronic miracle definitely stated that this new masterpiece by Van Dyk is surely a must have for all high quality club music connoisseurs and is worth one more Grammy.
