Magic Hour review

Scissor Sisters – spectacular on stage, spectacular in tracks

The story of Scissor Sisters began at the turn of two centuries in the city, where anyone can feel free – in New York. Initially it was a duo called Fibrillating Scissor Sisters, in fact. However later its founders, Babydaddy (Scott Hoffman) and Jake Shears (Jason Sellards) met various artists, whose musical preferences, and, which was more important, lifestyle and way of thinking were alike. Thereby, with time the duo was turning into a quintet: Ana Matronic (Ana Lynch), Del Marquis (Derek Gruen) and Randy Real (Randy Schrager) became the permanent members of the band, and Scissor Sisters found their fame with this very extend line-up. By the way, the audience’s recognition was received in practically no time: the debut self titled album of 2004 carried the band into a category of the most talked about and demanded groups. For example, in Great Britain that long play got multi platinum status, and that was a great achievement indeed, as soon as Albion’s listeners had always been quite petted and selective. Long plays of 2006 and 2010, Ta-Dah and Night Work also proved to be as good as their predecessor, so they let Scissor Sisters strengthen a good reputation of distinctive and original artists with their own unique style. Their stylistics of the seventies was another signature feature of the band. Well, what kind of surprises will the new studio attempt titled Magic Hour of the American band bring to the listeners?

Magic Hour – an hour of excellent music

So, finally Magic Hour saw the light. What did the listeners expected from it? Well, as soon as Scissor Sisters were so pleased to keep and interpret the style of the seventies of the previous century, it was quite logical to assume that Magic Hour would be created in more or less same way. However a great surprise is waiting for everybody: in one of the interviews Shears stated that the record would present to the audience nothing but future-pop, which is simply a popular music of the nearest future. The album is opened by an energetic and vivid composition Baby Come Home with an incredibly clashy beat to remember. Unmistakable claimant for dance floors conquest, because it is a real pleasure to move with that flow and beat. Then goes the song called Keep Your Shoes On, which proved to have not less original beat and a huge volume of electronic sounds. Connoisseurs of mind-bending melodies and rhythms, cheer up! All the long play’s songs will bring you a lot of pleasure and positive emotions. Just pay attention to Only The Horses, for example – it is a hundred per cent dance hit! Nevertheless, the album had enough space for rock compositions as well: San Luis Obispo is a good demonstration of this. It is a great sample of soft, melodiousness rock with excellent solo. No one will be able to ignore Somewhere, a tasty track, which had been created in Scissor Sisters’ signature style. These are not just regulated notes, this is a pure energy of dance.

Rock, energy and dancing

It is not a secret to anyone that Scissor Sisters is a band that specializes on dance music. The quintet is really good at this genre, while its members’ experience and talent let them create truly rememberable compositions. In fact, the band is so good due to its ability to combine various directions, from rock to before-mentioned music of dance floors and nightclubs. Scissor Sisters prepare these cocktails in such an elaborated way and with such pleasure that listeners get the artists’ energy. It is not a tragedy if you have not had a chance to attend the quintet’s show yet. Well, it goes without saying that studio works cannot bring to listeners the incredible atmosphere of live performances, but Scissor Sisters take the working on their songs so scrupulous that one should not worry about insipidity. It will not be boring, there is no doubt about it. The band’s pervious three records were received by listeners all around the world so well that Magic Hour was definitely among the most awaited releases of this spring. Now, when any willing person can get acquainted with the quintet’s renewed sound, it is clear as a day that the long play was totally worth waiting. The band presented the entire hour of excellent music, and this is a truly serious approach, deserving respect.
